Different Types of Dance Shoes You Should Know

Types of Dance Shoes

If you have just signed your child up for ballet classes in Singapore, there are a couple of things that she will need for dance lessons. This includes her leotard, tights and pointe shoes. What we want to talk about is how important a good pair of dance shoes is in taking your child far through her growth as a ballerina and performer. You may want to check with the dance instructor if there is a specific shoe type your child should start with. If not, you can ask for recommendations from other parents. This will help you get a better idea of what to buy and will make it easier to find the best fit for your little dancer.

Singapore ballet academy

Types of Ballet Shoes

There are different types of shoes which can be based on the level of ballet training. To help you understand which might be ideal for your child, take a look at these four types of ballet shoes:

  • Full Sole: There is a thin leather pad sewn to the back of the ballet shoes, known as the sole. For full-sole shoes, this sole stretches from the toe to the heel, providing extra stability. This is best for young children and beginners who have no experience in ballet who needs to focus on building foot strength.
  • Split-Sole: As one gains more experience, that is when split-sole shoes come in. The sole is split into two portions. This type of shoes gives more emphasis to the point of the foot.
  • Demi-pointe Shoes: Here, the sole does not have a shank, which is a box at the toe of the shoe. When worn, demi-pointe shoes share a similar feeling to pointe shoes, which prepares the dancer to transition to pointe.
  • Pointe Shoes: Compared to demi-pointe shoes, these shoes have a shank to provide support for pointe dancing. These are specifically for advanced dancers with several years of training, having enough strength to dance on pointe.

What Materials Should I Consider?

Next up is the type of material the shoes are made of, which includes canvas, satin and leather. While ballet is a graceful form of dance, it requires a lot of strength and endurance. Thus, the fabric makes a difference to the dancer.

  • Canvas: The best part about canvas shoes is, you can machine-wash them so your child can go to class in fresh, clean shoes. While canvas shoes are easy to clean and maintain, they may form holes after some use.
  • Satin: Usually adorning the traditional pink colour, this delicate material looks the prettiest and most attractive out of the three options. But as they can wear out quickly, satin ballet shoes should preferably be worn for special occasions and not for practice.
  • Leather: Being a hardwearing material, it can improve the dancer’s foot strength. Leather is also more durable than satin and canvas, which explains its higher price.

Take note of the type of floor your child will be dancing on as this determines the amount of grip her shoes should have, so you can check that beforehand to help you narrow down your ballet shoe choices for your child.

Anything Else to Take Note Of?

Most importantly, ensure that your child feels comfortable in her dance shoes. This is essential in order to perform her best during training and subsequently in her recitals. When she tries on her ballet shoes, get her to walk around and dance a little in them. Press gently at the back of the shoe to check if there is some space. If there is, this is good as there will be a bit of room for the foot to move around.

Besides refraining from buying ballet shoes that are too tight, it is also best not to purchase a size too large. While it sounds like a good idea to buys shoes that will last your child for some time as she grows, it may be too big for her at the beginning. This will not be good when she practices in them. The main point is, not only will wearing ill-fitting shoes increase the risk of accidents during ballet lessons, but they will also contribute to foot and ankle problems. Ballet shoes that are comfortable and flexible is important for her concentration in dance lessons.

Designed and conceptualized by our Founder & Artistic Director, Ms. Lena Foo, all our studios are equipped with sprung floors and Harlequin dance mats to provide a safe learning environment. How to Prevent Injuries While Taking Dance Lessons

Kids Ballet Dance Class

Top dancers can make the hardest choreography look effortlessly flawless. It comes with experience and practice. Not forgetting the carefully executed technique that ensures they not only look beautiful while dancing, but they are avoiding injuries as they do so. Before you sign your child up for ballet classes in Singapore, it is important that your child first recognizes the importance of taking care of her body while dancing.

Common Dance Injuries

Dance injuries can occur suddenly, but it can also be due to overuse. As a result, the injury can get progressively worse when it is not addressed in the earlier stages. Chronic problems such as tendonitis can develop from repetitive stress over a long period of time. To name a few, some common injuries include ankle sprains or strains, snapping hip and arthritis in the knee, hip, ankle and foot. Sometimes, what seems like an ankle sprain may actually be a fracture in the bone. When an injury occurs, while pain relievers and application of ice packs may help, they are not a long-term solution. If the pain in her leg persists, for example, it is important to get a doctor to access the condition.

 Dance schools in Singapore

But as the age-old adage goes, it is always better to be safe than sorry. To prevent our kids from experiencing the pain of dance injuries, here are five ways that parents can help with as your child embarks on her dance journey:

  • Check if the ballet shoes fit your child well before purchasing them. Not wearing the correct size will not only feel uncomfortable and painful, but they may also increase your child’s risk of falls when she dances. Tight-fitting shoes can put too much pressure on the toes and particularly for ballerinas who have to dance on pointe, that can be damaging to the feet. Likewise, when the shoes are too loose, there is lesser grip and can also cause corns and calluses to form on her feet.
  • Eat well. With good nutrition, that is half the battle won. In order to perform at her best, your child will need a good balance of protein and carbohydrates in her diet for optimal bone health and muscle growth. Don’t forget to put a bottle of water in her bag before she goes for class so that she can hydrate herself well in between lessons.
  • Remind her to always stretch before dancing. When your child warms up before practice, this prepares the body for the activity that follows next. Stretching is, in fact, a key part of injury prevention. It can be easy to forget to stretch and even when your child does, she may not be doing it properly. As such, reiterating the need to stretch correctly will help. To make it fun and enjoyable, you can also stretch with her on a regular basis. Your little dancer will definitely love it!
  • Prevent overtraining. As parents, we know how excited and enthusiastic children can be when they are first trying out something new. Especially when they are passionate about it, it can get out of control. In the case of ballet, they can keep doing the same dance over and over again as they are determined to perfect it. But the repetitive movements can overwork her joints and muscles, doing her more harm than good. When she is at home and not in lessons, this is the best time to let her body rest and rebuild itself. It is thus important to stop her when necessary to avoid any injuries.

Common Dance Injuries and Prevention Tips

Besides these four ways, ensuring that your child is executing the correct technique is also crucial. It is thus necessary that the dance teacher teaches your child the right techniques and ensure that she maintains them. Here at Dancepointe, every child gets the best out of each lesson under our instructors.

Designed and conceptualized by our Founder & Artistic Director, Ms. Lena Foo, all our studios are equipped with sprung floors and Harlequin dance mats to provide a safe learning environment. 4 Unexpected Benefits of Ballet Classes for Kids

Ballet is a beautiful craft to look at and being a ballerina, it feels even more satisfying knowing that all eyes are on you. The moment the music starts, you feel the melody and express it to the best until the last note. The feeling we just described, that is the feeling your child will experience every time she is prepared for a performance, however small it is. If you are looking for something fulfilling for your child, why not consider signing her up for a ballet class for kids in Singapore?

It is easier to try new things and explore out of the box when one is at a young age. Activities like piano and ballet can encourage your child to discover what she is good at and the things she is most interested in. As a parent, that is all we want for our child which is why needless to say, there must be some takeaways to ensure your child is making the most out of each lesson. Ballet can be full of benefits of ballet classes for kids, some of them possibly unexpected! Keep scrolling for the four benefits of learning ballet from young:

  • Discipline and dedication

As the saying goes, “By constant self-discipline and self-control, you can develop greatness of character.” Besides instilling grace and poise, your child will also become more disciplined in her overall life. Such positive qualities start from young and will take her far as she grows up. At this age, this is the best opportunity to shape her personality and build on her character traits. Here, success is all about the process. It is more than just the final outcome and your child will get to learn that in ballet. Showing gradual improvement and bettering oneself matters most in her journey in ballet, and this is where discipline comes in.

  • Confidence

When a child is afraid to step up and even try something new, low self-esteem has a part to play in that. If your little one is shy, learning ballet will truly help in making her feel good about herself whenever she executes her dance steps correctly, to eventually build her confidence. Dancing on stage with her peers and even performing solo are little opportunities for her to gain confidence. You can also play a part by getting her to perform in front of you from time to time and shower your little one with praise for her efforts.

  • Become a great team player

Ballet classes are another great way to make new friends. Dance as a whole provides an extremely supportive community as the young dancers have to work together and understand each other. Beyond expressing the story through one’s body movements to the audience, there has to be communication among the dancers as well to make things work. In every dance piece, it requires some form of coordination from all ballerinas in order to execute the choreography. Here, teamwork is essential in ballet and to see everything come together, now that is truly an accomplishment to be proud of!

  • A good health booster

As your child grows older and more experienced in her ballet journey, a toned physique is just a side effect for all her hard work. Ballet requires a lot of slow, fluid movement while holding a good posture and over time, your child’s strength and stamina will gradually increase. We all know how bad it is to be hunched over while reading a book and watching television, but ballet will teach your child to be more aware of her posture. If you have been reminding your child to not slouch, you will soon not have to as she will become used to maintaining a perfect posture through her ballet lessons.

In ballet, there are numerous benefits and lessons worth learning. At Dancepointe, every kid will get the best out of each lesson under our instructors. If you are a parent who is planning to sign your child up for a ballet course in Singapore, Dancepointe might just be the academy you are looking for.
